Menopause Essentials: A Case-Based Lecture Series for Medical Students & Residents

Menopause is a universal life transition that will affect nearly half of the population, yet menopause care remains underrepresented in medical education and clinical training.  This leaves trainees less prepared to recognize these concerns, counsel patients, and provide evidence-based treatment.

This lecture series is designed to introduce medical students, residents, and other allied health students/trainees to the fundamentals of menopause. The series will follow a fictional patient throughout her menopause journey, allowing learners to review clinical questions that arise in practice.

Over a series of multiple lectures, attendees will navigate manifestations of menopause, including:

  • Vasomotor symptoms: Understanding hot flashes and night sweats, evaluating impact on quality of life, and reviewing hormonal and nonhormonal treatment options.

  • Genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM): Recognizing vaginal and urinary symptoms, understanding underlying pathophysiology, and learning evidence-based approaches to treatment.

  • Low libido and sexual health: Exploring the multifactorial nature of changes in sexual function during menopause and developing an approach to assessment and management.

The goal of this series is to expose future clinicians and clinicians early in their career to the clinical fundamentals, and practical knowledge they can carry into residency and clinical practice. Menopause care should not be an afterthought—it is an important part of caring for patients across the lifespan for clinicians in specialties including but not limited to internal medicine, primary care, obgyn, urology, PM&R, psychiatry, cardiology, endocrinology, and hospital medicine.

Meet Your Speaker: Jen Romanello, MD

What happens when a medical trainee decides that menopause care shouldn’t be an afterthought?

Jen Romanello, MD is an Internal Medicine resident at NYU (Class of 2027) and a passionate advocate for bringing menopause and sexual medicine into medical education.

She attended Rush Medical College in Chicago, graduating in 2024. She brings a unique perspective to this lecture series because she is actively practicing menopause care during residency and has helped change the culture around menopause management within her residency program, building greater confidence for those at her program in addressing these concerns

.

In 2020, she founded the Forum on Female Sexual Medicine. Her work has been featured on multiple podcasts, and she has been recognized for helping spark a broader movement among medical students to become involved in female sexual medicine.

Why attend? Because this is not menopause education from a distance. Jen Romanello, MD brings the perspective of an early career physician who is actively navigating these questions, fielding questions from colleagues, and helping make menopause care a more routine part of medical practice.
