Angie Murthy is a medical student at the University of Illinois College of Medicine. Born in Omaha, NE, she graduated from the University of Chicago with Honors in Linguistics. She is passionate about mitigating sexual health disparities for persons with disabilities. During college, she volunteered in clinical and recreational spaces that directly serve persons with disabilities, learned from healthcare workers and patients of the disparities people with disabilities face, and pursued research in Disability Studies, an interdisciplinary field that critically examines the meaning, nature, and consequences of disability. In her gap year, she co-authored a piece with her mentor, anthropologist Michele Friedner, entitled “Embracing Multiple Normals” for the New England Journal of Medicine which encourages clinicians to challenge their notions of normality in order to better embrace the lived experience of disability in their practice. Angie currently serves on UICOM’s executive board for the OB/GYN Student Interest Group, and recently completed her training to become a sexuality educator for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities. She will use this training to - with the support of some incredible self-advocates and physician mentors - curate and implement free, gender-inclusive, and disability-informed sexuality workshops for persons with disabilities, their health providers and parents/allies (coming fall 2021). In her free time, Angie loves spending time with people she loves, taking pictures of her Shiba Inu (Mika), and teaching hot yoga at CorePower Yoga studios across Chicago!
