Shreya Sarmah is a medical student at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in the Class of 2025. Shreya grew up in Ottawa, Canada and graduated from the University of Ottawa in May 2021 with a degree in Honours Biology and minor in Psychology. While volunteering at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario during high school, Shreya learned about the inaccessibility of period products in remote indigenous communities and the negative consequences this has on women’s education and wellbeing. This initiated her passion for menstrual equity. Throughout college, Shreya hosted fundraisers and product drives in Ottawa to collect period products to send to remote Canadian communities. During her undergraduate, Shreya also conducted a research project investigating the effects of infection during pregnancy on the postpartum mental health of the mother. Many conditions primarily affecting women, such as postpartum disorders, are underrepresented in research. These experiences have furthered her interest in women’s health. Shreya hopes to continue advocating for menstrual equity and investigating under-researched women’s health topics during medical school.
